LATRICIA ATKINS - MCBA PRESIDENT
Letter From The President

Greeting Professional Industry Peers,
Have you ever had to start quickly on a task and hit the ground running? As an industry leader, you likely have. Allow me to share with you about my hair journey, which began in 1990. By the time I reached middle school, I had a large clientele with cars parked
from one end of the street to another. I soon realized people wanted great hair without the high cost, leading me toward a profession as an unlicensed stylist. Little did I know, I was not only being underpaid for my work, but most importantly, I would be stepping on the toes of licensed professionals. This revelation led me to cease from styling hair and going on to college to pursue a different career path.
After a dissatisfying stint in government work, I pursued my passion for hair by enrolling at Delta Technical College. Mastering the theory behind haircare was a new challenge, as I had always been a natural. Graduating and becoming licensed, I thrived behind the
chair, delighting clients with transformative makeovers. Educating others in the industry became my next goal, leading me to enroll in Delta Technical College's instructor program. Now, I teach students the science of hair, skin, nails, and industry regulations,
constantly seeking opportunities for growth in my dream career.
I joined the Mississippi Cosmetology Association (MCA) and served on the executive board as a director, assisting with membership, teaching at education shows, and aiding in media and marketing. I also helped peers with various tasks and continued to drive the association forward. I later became a compliance inspector for the Mississippi State Board of Cosmetology (MSBC), a highlight of my career. This role allowed me to meet like-minded individuals in the industry and emphasize the importance of sanitation without instilling fear in salon owners or professionals. Serving in this position was an enriching experience, but I remained eager for new challenges.
After completing my assignment with the MSBC, I continued working with MCA. I was motivated to seek more ways to assist in the industry and raise awareness among my peers about significant yet often overlooked changes over the years. By actively participating in meetings and engaging with the community, I utilized the Mississippi Cosmetology and Barbering Association (MCBA) platform to educate on sanitation practices and enhance industry leaders' understanding of legal obligations in accordance with state regulations and statutes. I am excited to elevate industry leadership, education, and facilitate collaboration across different boards.

It is crucial for everyone to have a voice and be included on this journey. I am committed to bridging generational gaps and advocating for industry licensing standards. We must stand together to protect our profession from unlicensed individuals seeking to undermine our
hard work and expertise. It is time for all industry professionals to unite and show our legislators that we are determined to uphold our craft.

Let's work together to create a community of solidarity and harmony, with the motto, "WE ARE ONE industry, one unity!" Let's start making a difference now!

Your President,
Latricia Lynn Akins
